Why Inventory Management Matters for Cash Flow Stability

Healthy cash flow is essential to keeping a business moving forward. However, cash flow challenges are not always caused by declining sales or rising expenses. Sometimes, the problem is sitting quietly on a warehouse shelf.

In a recent Forbes Business Council Expert Panel, business leaders shared key factors to consider when diagnosing cash flow instability. I was pleased to contribute my perspective on one area that can easily be overlooked: inventory management.

For manufacturers, distributors, and other product-based businesses, inventory represents a significant investment. Yet excess or slow-moving stock can tie up capital that could otherwise support payroll, operations, equipment, growth, or new opportunities.

That is why forecasting matters. Businesses should regularly compare purchasing decisions with actual customer demand. In addition, leaders should identify products that are moving slowly and address excess inventory before it begins to affect liquidity.

Better inventory management is not simply about reducing stock. Instead, it is about maintaining the right balance. A company needs enough inventory to meet demand without allowing unnecessary stock to consume valuable working capital.

Ultimately, strong cash flow depends on understanding where money is being used throughout the business. When leaders pay closer attention to inventory, purchasing, and demand, they can make more informed decisions and create greater financial stability.
